The Purpose, the Journey, and the Fun along the way

Here we are, two moms who love our cameras and miss our college art classes and colleagues. With a family it can be difficult to find time for the creative process. Emily and I are using this blog as a way to have fun, work on our photography, keep each other accountable, and be creative!

Each Monday one of us will post a challenge for us both to complete and post a response to by Friday that week. Over the weekend, if time permits each of us will also critique the other's work.

We hope to use this blog as a way to grow together as photographers as we continue to grow as mothers.

If you happen to stumble upon our blog, and want to join in, feel free! Just post your response, with a link to your photos in the MckLinky link for that week. Challenges stay open for three weeks after they are posted.

Challenge #45

I was thinking last night about when to start our Christmas challenge and with today being our family's Christmas cookie baking day, I figured most other people have already started some of their Holiday traditions. So for the next two weeks the challenge will be very very simple.

The Challenge:
The Christmas Journal

The Rules:
1.) Keep a photographic "Journal" of your Christmas activities.
2.) Post as many or few journal entries as you'd like in the MckLinky provided below, but if you do more than one make sure you put that after your name (Diana #1, Diana #2 and so on).
3.) Challenge yourself to describe your traditions and memories in new and creative ways. Tell us a story!
4.) Have fun and create many beautiful memories!

See you all in two weeks!

Challenge #44

Hey all,
Time for a more technical challenge this week.

The challenge:
Shoes

The goal of this challenge is to take something ordinary and make it look extraordinary.

If you're a little stumped head on over to challenge #41 where we did a study on "the rule of thirds". Go ahead, click on the link there and read the article, or look that the offerings for that week.

Have fun seeing shoes through new eyes!

Challenge #43

Wow! It's so great to see so many of you back and participating in the challenges! It's so inspiring to see everyone's interpretations of the challenges. I'm happy to see that many of you are taking advantage of the extended submission deadlines. I'll continue to keep the MckLinky link open for at least three weeks after the challenge is posted.

For this week I thought we'd do a fun challenge and put off the technical challenge for another week.

This week's challenge:

TOYS!

The Rules:

1.) Submit a series of 3 photos (try to tell a story with your three images, have a little fun!)
2.) Since we've had a few people who seem to be interested in photo manipulation, tweaking is allowed.
3.) MckLinky will be up for the next three weeks so submit when you can. The sooner the better though, you'll probably get more comments that way!

Challenge #41

I thought we'd try another technical challenge this week. This week's challenge is inspired by a post I read over at Pioneer Woman Photography, a great photography blog!

The Challenge:

The Rule of Thirds

Submit three photographs of the same subject demonstrating the rule of thirds. You can either take three photos, cropping your image differently, or take one picture and crop it three different ways.

MckLinky will be up for two weeks.

Have fun!

Diana

Challenge #40

For this week's challenge I thought we'd explore an idea, and I know this one will be difficult for me.

The Challenge:

"Old Fashioned"

The Rules:

1. You are free to submit as many or as few photos as you'd like.
2. Pictures can be in b/w or colour
3. Mcklinky will stay open for the next two weeks if you don't get to it this week it's okay if you submit next week instead.

Have fun hunting!

Challenge #39

Hey everyone! So sorry for the delay. I don't know where the week went!

This week I thought I'd do a bit of a technical challenge to see how well we know our cameras, and what we can learn from doing something a little bit different.

The Challenge:

Shooting Blind

The subject matter is completely up to you, but you are only allowed 10 shots. For 5 of those shots you can look through your view finder. For the other 5 resist the urge and shoot them without the use of your viewfinder or screen. Sometimes when a photographer is working a unique location it can be hard to get the shot you want because you're eyeball can't go where the camera can. This is an exercise to help you learn how the camera can be an extension of your eyes.

Submit your favorite photo from each set of 5.

Have fun!

Diana

(MckLinky will be up for two weeks for this one.)

The Rules:
1.) Just follow the photo challenge rules posted on the challenge you choose and
2.) Make sure in your post and in your link name that you include what challenge you are catching up on.

Do as many or few as you'd like!

Hey guys, I just realized that it's almost Wednesday already. I think in light of the most recent events in my life it would be a good week to take off. Any suggestions for next week's challenge?

Challenge #37

Hello all you wonderful photographers out there!

While I was sitting here trying to come up with a suitable idea for this week's challenge, my husband threw one out there for me to think about as he headed into the other room. His idea got me brain storming and this is what I came up with.

In honor of Fall I thought we could focus on two opposites.

This week's Challenge:

Hot vs. Cold

The rules:

1.) Submit two photos exploring this idea.
2.) B/W or Colour is fine.
3.) Tweaking is allowed if you find you have the time.
4.) Please try and submit by this coming weekend (the 17/18) if you can't get at it right away no worries. I'm leaving the MckLinky open an extra week for late posters.)

See you this weekend!

Challenge #31

My hubby helped me to come up with this one- he likes the challenges that have a technical side to them- to help educate people how to deal with certain types of lighting situations, etc., so here's what we came up with:

A Brand New Day

Use these words as inspiration for a series of photos (3-5 pictures)
The sky/sun should not be the main focus of your photos
B/w or color
Editing is not allowed; however, you may crop your pictures as you see fit.

Have a great time, fellow shutterbugs and photographic artists! ;)

Challenge #28

Wow! We keep adding new photographers every week! This week I'd like to offer a hearty welcome to Tomo. We're so glad you decided to join in the fun.

Since most of our challenges involve more than one photo I thought I'd switch it up a little this week and have a challenge where we post only ONE image.

This week's theme:

BIG and small

Rules:
1.) One photo and one photo only.
2.) B/W or Colour is fine.
3.) No tweaking please.

Challenge #27

What lovely blue photos we had last week. It was fun to see everyone's interpretation. It's also nice to see that some of our newer members are feeling comfortable enough to comment on other's photos. Remember; if you don't have a lot of time to comment (this is also a reminder for me!) don't be afraid to talk about only one photo for each person. We all highly value everyone's feed back (and no worries if you think you have nothing to say, just talk about what you see!)

This week's challenge is:

FILL IN THE BLANK

I Love........

I want........

I wish for.......

Rules:
1.) Please submit three photos by Sat. Aug 8th.
2.) You may pick one fill in the blank and submit three photos for it, or do one photo for each fill in the blank.
3.) B/W or Colour
4.) Tweaking allowed

Keep up the great work everyone!

So without further ado:

This week's challenge is brought to you by the colour BLUE!
We're going to go on a little treasure hunt this week.

Rules:

1.) Go out into your community/city/town/street and search for things that are blue.
2.) Submit three photos (Colour of course) by Sat. Aug 1st.
3.) Tweaking is allowed.
4.) Try to create a set of photos as apposed to just three random pictures. Think about how they all work together to create either an idea or a feeling.
5.) HAVE FUN!

Challenge #25

Hello again, everyone!
It was great to see a couple more people join in the fun last week- and we had great, creative entries- it's so much fun to look through them all (I know- I gotta comment yet ;)

Anyway, this week's challenge is to do a setup to specifically "sell a product"- this can be anything, really, for example : hat, shoes, cat food, soap- anything. The challenge is to do this with a friend, relative, or pet as your model.
Submit 3 photos- and let us know which is your favorite.
These may be b/w, color, or anything in between.
Editing is allowed.
And, as always.... have fun!

Photo Challenge #24 submissions via MckLinky

Okay folks, what do you say we give the MckLinky another try? I wasn't going to but since Josh asked about it, and Emily asked about it I thought we'd see if it would maybe work right for us this week. The developer was doing some work on the program last week and sent out an e-mail to apologize for some of the problems people were having with it.

Like last week:

All you have to do is click on the link that says "you are next, click here to enter your link" and then enter your name and your link (put in your link just like we've been doing.) The linky will stay open till Tuesday in case we have any late posters. What it will do is post a list of links as soon as you submit yours.

*note to Josh: I submitted your link for you!

Challenge #24

Hi Gang,

Sorry to the few of you that posted late, for some reason the link closed early, I was worried about that happening. I'll work on trying to get your entries on the link as soon as it starts working again. In the mean time feel free to head over to FB and share with us your thoughts on this new system of posting.

Challenge #24

Pick a day this week and tell us about it using your camera.

Rules:
1.) Submit as many or as few photos as you'd like.
2.) B/W or Colour
3.) please no tweaking
4.) Photos due Sat. July 18, 2009

This challenge is about telling a story, finding a way to narrate through pictures. You don't have to narrate your whole day, you can pick just a portion of it if you'd like. Have fun!

Mcklinky

Hi All,

I promised Em I'd give this a try. I'm not sure if any of you have seen any of these linky things on other sites but we thought maybe we'd try it this week to see if posting submissions could be easier. So for this week's challenge how about we try something a little new?

All you have to do is click on the link that says "you are next, click here to enter your link" and then enter your name and your link (put in your link just like we've been doing.) The linky will stay open till Monday in case we have any late posters. What it will do is post a list of links as soon as you submit yours. I'll start a discussion group on FB where we can discuss this new tool.

Happy shooting!

If you'd like to join in on the discussion (or start your own about anything else) please feel free to head on over there. If you are one of our newer posters and are not yet part of our FB group please leave your name in a comment to this post and I will add you as a friend and invite you to the group.

The challenge:

STRIPES!

1.) Three or Five photos (try not to make it obvious what you were photographing. Leave us guessing if you can!)
2.) B/W or Colour
3.) Tweaking alowed

Challenge #22

Good morning all! I would like to offer a warm and hearty welcome to our newest contributor, Bschwalbz! It's really exciting to have someone new joining in the fun.

Okay onto this week's challenge! As many of you know Wedding season is upon us, which is keeping me pretty busy on the weekends. Last night I had the pleasure of attending a wedding instead of shooting it. I thought today we'd do a wedding inspired challenge based on that old little rhyme that brides often stick to when planning the details of what they will wear. I'm sure you are all familiar with it:

Something Old,
Something New,
Something Borrowed,
Something Blue.

The Rules:
1.) Four images
2.) Let's steer away from images that actually have to do with weddings, use your imagination with this one. Let's get outside the box a little.
3.) B/w or colour
4.) Photo Submissions due by Sat. July 4th.

Have fun everyone and have a great week! It was so nice to see everyone's submissions this weekend!

Photo challenge #21

Happy first (full) day of summer, everyone!
Many of us are trying desperately to stay cool now that summer has hit us- and some of the most popular ways to keep cool (at least for me :) is to hang out by the water, swim in the water, have water balloon fights, go tubing, etc......
So, you may have guessed it, this week's challenge is...

WATER!

Submit 5 photos of water- in any way, shape, or form
Tweaking IS allowed.
Have submissions in by Saturday, June 27th.

I will post the submissions on Sunday, June 28th.
If you are new to the challenge, all you have to do is leave a comment with the link to THAT specific challenge entry (not just your general blog/web link). Thanks! Have fun, everyone!

I can't believe it's this late in the week already! Here's the round up from over a week ago. I think perhaps it was either a challenge for everyone, or we all sort of needed a break. I really love how so many of you have been able to keep up with these challenges!

Hi All! This past weekend was super crazy for me. I shot two weddings and am completely tapped dry. I thought that it might be a good week for all of us to take a break. I'll post the roundup for Challenge #20 when I have the time this week. I still hope to be able to finish my photos for this past challenge.

Enjoy the week off! I'll have a new challenge up Monday June 22.

Photo Challenge #20

Welcome to Challenge #20 everyone!  You should all be very proud of yourselves.  I can't believe we're at challenge #20 already!  It's been a very fast and fun journey...

For this week's challenge we're going to do something a little more abstract and perhaps move most of us out of our comfort zone.

This week's challenge:
NATURE OUT OF FOCUS

The Rules:

1.) B/W or Colour Photos
2.) Please submit only 3
3.) Photos must be of nature and MUST be out of focus
4.) Photo submissions due between Friday, June 14 and Sat., June 15.
Oh and 5.) no tweaking please!

Hint: This week's challenge is to encourage you to focus on composition instead of the subject.

Round Up #19

Well here's the round up for last week!  Enjoy checking out everyone's photos.  I hope through our own experiments and everyone else's we were able to learn a little more about natural light.

Monday, June 1, 2009

Photo Challenge #19

Hello everyone! This week we'll be doing another challenge dealing with light.

Way back when we started the challenges we had a week (photo challenge #2) where we took photos of buildings at different times of the day.  I thought we'd do something a little similar, a sort of exercise if you will.

The challenge:

Pick an object, pick a window in your place of residence and photograph that object at different times of the day at said window.

Rules:
1. Your object can be anything really, someone's head, a glass jar...whatever you'd like, just make sure it's the same thing in every photo.
2.  At the end of the week you will have to Submit 6 photos-three sets of two images.
3. Photograph your object at three different times of the day.  One photo is to be the same angle (so you'll have three total that look the same but that were taken at different times) and for the second photo of each set try and use the light available in the best possible way.
4. Please no tweaking since this is an exercise in light.
5. Submissions due between Friday, June 5 and Sat., June 6.
6. B/W or colour
7. If this is confusing leave a comment and I'll try and clarify!

Em will probably laugh when she reads this one since she knows I love the morning light that comes in through my windows.  You'll find it's amazing what you can accomplish with just a little natural light!

Have fun!

Photo Challenge #18

I've been toying with an idea for a series of challenges, but since the idea isn't completely worked out in my head I thought I'd do something a little different. This morning I woke up with a Sesame Street song in my head, one I'm sure we are all familiar with.  It goes something like this," 12345-6789,10-11,12"

This week's challenge is to photograph numbers 1-7 (my father always make us do things in prime numbers when I was a child, since I thought 12 photos would be overwhelming we'll just stick with 7).

Rules:
1.) 7 photos total (If you feel ambitious go ahead and do all 12), one photo for each number.
2.) your photos can either represent the number or have the actual number in letters or numbers.
3.) B/W or Colour
4.) Tweaking is allowed.
5.) Photos should be submitted  by either Friday, May 29 or Sat. May 30
5.) Have Fun!

Photo Challenge #17 Roundup

Hello all!  Sorry this is a bit late. Emily and I have both been busy busy.

So here's the round up for "a bug's life".

Monday, May 18, 2009

Weekly Photo Challenge #17

Good Morning, Everyone!

This week's theme:
A Bug's Life

Guidelines:
Submit 3 photos of bugs*- they may be of the same bug from different angles, or 3 different bugs.
These may be tweaked
they must have some color in them- so no B/W (can have select color**) or sepia

*A bug is anything with more than 4 legs that is in the insect world, an arachnid, or any kind of creepy-crawly thing.

**Select color is a b/w photograph with portions of it in color, like this.

Photo Challenge #15 Roundup

Hello all!  I truly hope that your Sat. wasn't as dreary and over cast as mine was!

Just after I post this I'm going to bop over to FB to set up a discussion group where we can all talk about what we learned about each other and ourselves through this challenge!

Good work everyone!

(As a side note, since I will be on vacation with the fam the week after next-YIPPIE!-, Emily is going to do the challenges for the next two weeks.  I probably won't be able to join in next week since we will be far away from most technology, so have a great next two weeks everyone!-diana)

Photo Challenge #15

The Coffee Cup

This week's challenge is an excises in recognizing that you have a vision unique to the way you look at the world.

The Challenge:
Photograph a Coffee Cup

The Rules:
1.) Submit three photos of the same cup
2.) Tweeking allowed
3.) B/W or Colour
4.) Photos due Friday May 8, 2009

My goal with this challenge is that we all photograph the same common item and when all is said and done, we get to see how other people view said item.  I'm going to open up a discussion on the FB Photo Challenge Group page where we can share our insight and thoughts.  I'll post that Friday so we can all share what we've learned about ourselves and our fellow photographers.  Enjoy your week!

Photo Challenge # 14 Roundup

Welcome to spring everyone!  I'm glad to see that we all had our own little individual challenges to overcome...for some of us it was the early arrival of spring, the late arrival of spring, or a broken car.  Sometimes pictures don't come easily and it's good to learn how to make your vision come through, even when things around you aren't working as you'd hoped!

Here's the roundup this week:

Photo Challenge #14

This week's challenge idea comes from Bekah.  A while back she shared with me a whole list of ideas and I thought, with all the spring rain we've been getting, this would be a good  week for a Spring Challenge!   Bekah mentioned that she and her mother used to go for walks in the springtime and try and find 21 different signs of spring.

The Challenge: 21 Signs of Spring

Rules:
1.) Take exactly 21 pictures this week exploring the theme.
2.) Submit your top 5 favorite images.
3.) Colour only.
4.) No tweaking.
5.) If you feel like sharing all 21 images feel free to do so, but please mark which are your top 5 favorites (Note: you do NOT have to post all 21 images if you don't feel like it.)

I'll be up north this weekend with my brothers so don't worry if the roundup isn't posted till Sunday or Monday.  I've been very busy, but I haven't forgotten about all our wonderful artists!
Have a great week everyone!

Photo Challenge #13

Happy Monday folks!  Welcome back to the challenge.  I hope and pray that you all had a blessed Easter.
This past weekend I shot a wedding with my good friend (and very talented photographer) Jessica.  Since the wedding was over an hour away we had time to talk over challenge ideas and this week's challenge comes courtesy of Jessica.

The Challenge:
Photograph something through the eyes of a cat.

Rules:
1. You can submit as many pictures as you'd like, no limit.
2. Try to explore an idea, a thought, a sequence of events.
3. No tweaking please.
4. B/W or Colour are welcome

Take the challenge as an opportunity to recognize that your legs don't have to always be used as tripods...  If you're having trouble, just spend a little time watching a cat, it should help give you some ideas!

Have fun!

Photo Challenge #12

This challenge is from Katie:
Since it is Holy week, and many of us are out of town and busy with the Easter Holiday, Katie thought it would be nice to have this due the Friday after Easter (April 17th)
Take the opportunity of having friends and family gatherings to take candid photographs (pictures/portraits of people in a natural state- not looking directly at camera)
Enter 3-5 of your favorite candids, color or black and white, no tweaking. There may be as many people in each photo as you'd like.
Remember, this is due 2 weeks from now, April 17th.

Have a Blessed Easter, Everyone!

Photo Challenge #9

Hey everyone!  I had a little idea this week, after thinking about my own struggles with getting the challenges done on time and I thought we'd switch it up a little.  This week is going to be another portrait challenge.

Rules:
1.) You have to take one picture of yourself every day for a total of five pictures at the end of the week.
2.) You can take ONLY ONE photo a day.
2.) The portraits can be honest, simple, all the same, tell a story, or be contrived in some way or another.
3.)B/W or Colour
4.) Tweaking is not allowed.

In an age of digital photography I think sometimes we get too comfortable with the take and toss mentality.  This challenge is an exercise for all of us to really take the time to think about what we're doing before we do it.  There was a time before digital cameras where a photographer had one negative (usually glass and sometimes a tintype) in their camera and that was it. They had to know exactly what they were doing to make it count.  So don't worry about your picture looking perfect. Use this as an opportunity  to learn about what you and your camera are really capable of.

Have fun!

Photo Challenge # 8 Round Up

Hello fellow photographers I hope you all had fun with food this week! Before I move onto posting the submissions I just want to apologize for not getting to everyone's photos these past two weeks.  It's been very hard for me to find a solid chunk of time where I can sit and focus. Everyone has done such a wonderful job at keeping up with the commenting, you all put me to shame!  Thank you so much for your faithfulness and understanding.  I'm going to try very hard to hit up all your pictures this week!

Here are the submissions.

Photo Challenge #7 Macro Challenge

Good Morning!

This week's challenge was actually inspired by Erin Jo's anatomy photos from 2 challenges ago.
Take a series of photos (2-5) of objects/people REALLY up close (macro)- try to make it so that we can't figure out what it is right away- but keep it in focus so we have a clear idea of color/texture/shape. Please no tweeking for this challenge. Oh, and don't give away what the objects are- let us guess!

Photo Challenge #6

Good morning all you wonderful photographers!  I hope everyone had a great weekend.

This week, for the challenge, I thought we'd play a little game most of you may remember from your childhood.  For me, as a mother, many of these "games" are coming back into use.  I thought it would be fun to make a challenge out of a sweet little game called, "I Spy".  The challenge is to use your creativity to find things that you feel accurately explore or explain a word, or more specifically, an adjective.

RULES:

1.) Photograph only items on the list.
2.) You may pick as many items as you'd like to photograph (there's no limit this week)
OR you can pick one item and submit as many interpretations of the item as you'd like.
3.) The photographs can be B/W or colour
4.) Please no tweeking for this challenge.
5.) Please submit your photos, by leaving a comment with a link to your submission, in the comment section of this post.  (to read more about submitting photos click here.) Submissions due this Friday, Feb 27, 2009.

THE LIST:

"I spy with my little eye, something that is:"

1.) round
2.) beautiful
3.) warm
4.) cute
5.) harsh
6.) reflective
7.) cold
8.) skinny
9.) wet
10.) soft
11.) old
12.) enticing
13.) scary
14.) brilliant
15.) painful
16.) silky
17.) smelly
18.) unkempt
19.) silly
20.) curvy

Have fun!

Photo Challenge #5 Roundup

Happy Friday everyone! We have some beautiful submissions this week. Thank you all for reading my blurb about posting.  Everyone posted their links perfectly!  It will save me a lot of time in the future.

Please feel free to visit everyone's photos and comment.  Receiving feed back is a wonderful way to learn and grow as a photographer.  Thank you everyone so far for taking an active interest in everyone's work.

Okay, here are the submission links! (Don't worry if you still need to submit photos, I'll be checking the blog and I'll post your links before I go to bed tonight.)

Photo Challenge #5

Before I get to our Monday challenge I'd like to address a little housekeeping issue, something I hadn't thought of before doing this blog.  It concerns posting links for the challenge.  At the end of every week either Em or I put together the round up. There are a few things you guys could do for us that would make it easier (usually it takes me a good 20 min.)  So here are some guidelines.

When you are interested in submitting photos for the current week's challenge please:

1.) Post a link to your entry (blog or gallery) in the comment section of that week's challenge.
a.) if you have a gallery, the address to that specific gallery where your photos are works out just fine (which you all have been doing correctly so far.)
b.) if you have a blog please make sure that the address you are posting is address for your entry, as opposed to the just your blog address.

If you're not sure how to do that it's easy.  Just click on the name of your post (in most cases for me it's something like "Photography Challenge #3"), you'll then be taken to a window containing just that post.  Just copy the web address and past it in the comment section of the current week's challenge.

Okay!  I hope that helps everyone...if you have any questions feel free to leave them here on on the FB page.
---------------------------------------

This week's challenge is brought to us by the lovely Erin Jo. She is our Guest Challenge Submitter...if that can be called an official title!

The theme is "Anatomy and the Human Form".

Rules:
1.) Please submit between 1-5 photos exploring this theme
2.) The photos can be Colour or B/W
3.) Tweeking is allowed

Thanks for the challenge this week Erin!

Okay guys!  Have fun shooting!

Facebook Group

Hey Everyone!  This week I set up a FB group as a place for us all to talk about the challenges and anything else on our minds.  Just a little note, discussions are encouraged. Every week I will start a discussion thread for that week's challenge.  It's easier using the threads then it is to use the wall.  Just look above where the wall is and you'll see what I'm talking about, the discussion board is right there!

I hope you all have fun this week.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's photos!

Photo Challenge #3

Good morning everyone!

I hope we all had fun stalking our subjects last week.  Nick (my hubby) and I were talking about possible options for the challenge this week and he suggested we do something to honor the month of February.  I liked the idea so this is what I came up with:

This week's challenge is to take UP TO 3 photographs featuring the colour RED.

Rules: If you have photo editing software and would like to use it you can with this challenge but it is not required.
Photo deadline is this Friday, February 6 leave a comment with a link to your photos in the comment section of this post.

If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment.

HAVE FUN!

Thanks for your entries!! I know this was a challenge for some of you due to camera limitations and children (myself included) but we really appreciate your effort :) Hopefully this one got you thinking more about what you can do with your camera in different lighting situations.

Photo Challenge #2 delay

Hey Everyone,

So my little Sam came down with croup last night and as a result I won't be able to get to posting my own photos and the round up till tomorrow.  It looks like a few others have had busy weeks as well, so for those of you who still wish to join in, you have one more day to submit your photos!

Photo Challenge #2

Hello, All!!
Thanks for the great entries last week- it was really awesome to see how everyone's self portraits were so different!
This week we'll do something very similar to what Monet would practice with his paintings:
Pick an outdoor area with an architectural element and take 3 pictures of that spot from the same angle- all at different times of day/different weather conditions. At least one of these shots should be a night time/long exposure shot. These can be either b/w or color. As before, no tweeking the photos in an editing program.
Have fun!
Feel free to post questions / suggestions about camera settings- we're in this to learn more about the art and science of photography!

Looking forward to seeing the posts on Friday :)
